our beloved faculty |
The Bachelor of Science (Materials
Science) program goal is to produce graduates with vast knowledge in Materials
Science fields especially for electronics and electrical industries, has
analytical and problem solving skills, able for life-long learning, application
of practical skills in Materials Science to correlate research results with
Materials Science concept. The Bachelor of Science (Materials Science) program
was formed with vision for Department of Physics University of Malaya to excel
as a center for study and research in Materials Science at international level.
The mission of the Materials Science program is to produce quality graduates
and to develop students potential who could contribute to society through
holistic learning approach.
As Material
Sciences students, we are being put under the supervision of Physics
Department. The Department of Physics,
University of Malaya was established in 1961 to train students who wish to
study physics comprehensively and to lead research in physics in Malaysia. The
department offers the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and the Doctor of
Philosophy degrees. Students who graduate with the Bachelor of Science degree
from the Department of Physics have the capability to hold various positions in
the government and private sectors, as well as to pursue their studies to the
higher degree levels in the field of physics or other related fields.
The Department of Physics has
attracted many students to enroll in the Faculty of Science. In the 2010/2011
academic session, a total of 32 students have enrolled in Bachelor of Science
(Physics) program. At the postgraduate level, 13 students are currently
enrolled in the Master of Science (Applied Physics) program by course work, 55
students in the Master of Science program by research, and 61 students in the
Doctor of Philosophy program. The Department of Physics has also successfully
acquired research funding under the 6th through 10th Malaysia Plan, and the
department is now equipped with modern and sophisticated facilities for
teaching and research.
The Department of Physics aims to
provide the best teaching in physics and to produce graduates who are
authoritative in physics. At the same time, the Department of Physics,
University of Malaya also emphasizes on research activities in order to
continue to excel and lead in this fundamental field of nature.
Among our pride as a Department of
Physics students is our respected lecturer,
Professor Dr Harith bin Ahmad who
has been chosen as the sole recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Professor Award
based on his works on Photonic field .There are currently only four Distinguished
Professors in Malaysia and only two in University Malaya and one of them is in
the Department of Physics. Because of that, we here in the UM often call him the "Einstein of Malaysia". Hihihi.
