REFLECTION

Nur Aqilah binti Meor Ruslan

During the first few weeks of Semester 2, I was told by most of my friends that we were compulsory to register for social engagement and the first thing that popped into my head was this course is going to be very fun as we got to socialise with the people regardless their background outside this university. As far as I know, this course is mainly about giving our contributions to the people outside UM in terms of education or humanitarian aid (orphanage, old folks home).  I was also very sure that this is going to be interesting knowing that we are going to be at some place and give our contributions from many aspects and whatnot.

We also had some discussions regarding the place and our targeted people to deal with was held at the auditorium. However, since the meeting is clash with my English class, I only had like 2-3 chances to attend the meeting. After a few discussions with my fellow coursemates, we have decided to choose MRSM Pendang as our place to do this social engagement and our targeted students were 145 form two students.

A few weeks before the camp started, we had some workshops to train our soft skills and communication to be a facilitator. During the workshop, we were a bit blurr and honestly, I have no talent in dancing as we have like more than 5 cheers to practice and to perform to the students. I have no interest in doing cheers so I had to push myself to do it no matter what as I did not want the students to feel that we are not having much time to do proper preparations. At that time, I just realised that organizing a camp was not easy. You have to brainstorm ideas about the games and how to give a proper instructions to the students. After some task division, I was being in charge to be in a welfare unit, together with Izzati Arina and I was also under my boss, Boon, which is Programme unit.

Upon our arrival at the Pendang, Kedah, I was very overwhelmed and touched that the school provide us homestays (air conditioned room.. yeay!) food and drinks throughout our programme and etc. Such a great hospitality!

During the camp, I was paired up with Kai Thung as facilitators to our group named Serkap. I was very glad that the students of the group were all cheerful and the fact that they actually willing to go to this programme during the weekends is what makes me so touched and i feel so appreciated.

This is our group, Serkap :)

Frankly speaking, I had so much fun throughout the camp. I have learnt a lot and some important things that I have learnt were friendship and cooperation. Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity, as what quoted by Khalil Gibran. They means the world to me. I got to work and mingle with my chinese friends that I am not used to talk to. We shared a lot of precious moments together. We ate together, we laughed together and we were rushing to go here and there (thats one of the sweet moments too :p). Basically, they are always in my heart and i would never forget those happy faces especially my groupmates. I can see the bond between the batchmates are getting stronger. Ahhh i love them! i enjoy seeing them improving and getting the confidence!

Lastly, after our trip to Kedah from 7th April to 10th April, I have learnt so many things, good and bad. Our hardwork and efforts paid off. To sacrifice a few days of my mid semester break was so worth it.. I enjoyed this camp a lot and how i wish i could do this kind of camp again in the near future. I have gained my self esteem and confidence, the way i communicate and cooperate with people. The outcomes are so worth it. I always love the idea of this course which is "giving back to the society" because as a university student, we cannot just simply go to the class/lectures and study from morning till night. We must contribute to the society of what we have learnt. I hope that I would be given the chance to be a part of this kind of camp again and to inspire as many people as I can. Till next time, kids!

Thank you my beloved coordinator, Dr Selvi for helping us in many ways. We cant thank you enough.

and thank you MRSM Pendang, You were great.

Love, Qyla.
