SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM

Now, let us move on to the main purpose of why this blog is written. It is mainly because of this social engagement subject. This subject is compulsory for every undergraduate’s students of the University of Malaya. In other word, you cannot graduate unless you have passed this course.
Why does the university emphasize much on this matter? The answer is that to encourage the students to participate themselves in charitable and volunteering activities especially and engaging with the society generally. As students, we have the responsibility to give back or contribute something to the society and not just sitting in front of books, focusing on our studies only. For that reason, this course is a must to UM students whether he/she likes it or not.
All the members involved would be able to gain fruitful experience through this project. In addition, students will not hesitate to contribute to the society in the future as this would change their negative perception on community service.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

our beloved faculty
The Bachelor of Science (Materials Science) program goal is to produce graduates with vast knowledge in Materials Science fields especially for electronics and electrical industries, has analytical and problem solving skills, able for life-long learning, application of practical skills in Materials Science to correlate research results with Materials Science concept. The Bachelor of Science (Materials Science) program was formed with vision for Department of Physics University of Malaya to excel as a center for study and research in Materials Science at international level. The mission of the Materials Science program is to produce quality graduates and to develop students potential who could contribute to society through holistic learning approach.

As Material Sciences students, we are being put under the supervision of Physics Department.  The Department of Physics, University of Malaya was established in 1961 to train students who wish to study physics comprehensively and to lead research in physics in Malaysia. The department offers the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Students who graduate with the Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Physics have the capability to hold various positions in the government and private sectors, as well as to pursue their studies to the higher degree levels in the field of physics or other related fields.

The Department of Physics has attracted many students to enroll in the Faculty of Science. In the 2010/2011 academic session, a total of 32 students have enrolled in Bachelor of Science (Physics) program. At the postgraduate level, 13 students are currently enrolled in the Master of Science (Applied Physics) program by course work, 55 students in the Master of Science program by research, and 61 students in the Doctor of Philosophy program. The Department of Physics has also successfully acquired research funding under the 6th through 10th Malaysia Plan, and the department is now equipped with modern and sophisticated facilities for teaching and research.

The Department of Physics aims to provide the best teaching in physics and to produce graduates who are authoritative in physics. At the same time, the Department of Physics, University of Malaya also emphasizes on research activities in order to continue to excel and lead in this fundamental field of nature.

Among our pride as a Department of Physics students is our respected lecturer,  Professor  Dr Harith bin Ahmad who has been chosen as the sole recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Professor Award based on his works on Photonic field .There are currently only four Distinguished Professors in Malaysia and only two in University Malaya and one of them is in the Department of Physics. Because of that, we here in the UM often call him the "Einstein of Malaysia". Hihihi.

HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY MALAYA

University of Malaya,(UM) is Malaysia's oldest university and situated on a 750 acre (309 hectare) campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. It was founded on 28 September 1905 in Singapore as the King Edward VII College of Medicine and on 8th October 1949, it became the University of Malaya with the merger of the King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College (founded in 1928).
The University of Malaya derives its name from the term 'Malaya' as the country was then known. The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions on 15 January 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1960, the government of the two territories indicated their desire to change the status of the Divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961 and the University of Malaya was established on 1st January 1962.
On June 16th 1962, University of Malaya celebrated the installation of its first Chancellor, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, who was also the country's first prime minister. The first Vice-Chancellor was Professor Oppenheim, a world-renowned Mathematician. Currently, His Royal Highness The Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah is the Chancellor of the University of Malaya. In 2015, the QS World University Rankings has ranked UM at the 146th place in the world. Also in the same year, the university is ranked 29th place in the QS Asian University Rankings, 3rd in Southeast Asia and is the highest ranked learning institution in Malaysia.
