Reflection by Shit Sin Ean (SIB 150062)

MATRIC NUMBER : SIB 150062

First of all ,I was not planning to take this course "social engagement" for this semester. But then some of my coursemates persuaded me to join in this semester, so that we were able to work together. At that time ,my credit hour reached its maximum then i had to apply extra credit hour to register this course. But i am not regret to this decision because what had happen was unforgettable.

In my opinion, "social engagement" is a compulsory university course that just want student to engage with the social by doing charity work. But after the briefing by Dr. Selvi, I know that this course is to practice students' soft skills.

After a few meeting, we decided to held a camp at MRSM di Pendang, Kedah .We also came out the organisation chart to smooth the process of organize the camp.We all agreed with the name of the camp "Inspire The Aspire".Then, it needed a lot of preparation such as negotiated with MRSM and planned a series of activities in the camp. We had a lot of workshop that to practice the dance and cheers ,think about the game station and the distribution of members. This was important to make sure all of us understand the flow of activities and can present it well during the camp.

During the camp, i was paired up with one of my coursemate, Farhan. We were the facilitator of group 5 which name was "Blazer". Maybe this was the first time for me to be the facilitator so i showed a little bit shy when i met with my group. But then i try to use my "broken malay" to communicate with all of them, luckily my group showed cooperation and patience to me.

After getting a well relationship within my group, i threw away my shyness and started to lead my group to cheer our own yells and compete with others group. I was really shocked when i found out my group was exactly creative and intelligent when we want to produce our yells and performance for talent night. The ideas that thought by them were out of my mind. I felt for the glory of my group because they showed a very good attitude which dint take the money on the floor and did not do fake job during one of the "grand chase" game.

During the sharing session, we shared our moments about this camp and experience about learning science. Although they were just form two students but they showed interesting to science. They asked us whether we will do this program again in their school or not, and we answered them,"if can, we will do it again".

After this camp, i never forget every angel in my group, they are too energetic and has determination. I learnt about social engagement is important to everyone. It teaches us a lot of lesson such as cooperation, build up confidence and self esteem which we cant learn from book. We should not just focus on the book, what we need is take more time to engage with this social.

Last but not least, thank you to my instructor Dr Selvi, all the facilitators and the MRSM students. Because all of you, we had made this program successed !

Mini Interview Student Session

This mini interview was taken on the last night of  'Inspire The Aspire' and also as a part of our social engagement course presentation/report later.
A very warm thankful to student Aida for volunteering and being the representative to the other form 2 students of MRSM Pendang.
Even though the interview was just short and simple, we wished that the students had gained the best experience and also learnt new things.
Hopefully the other form 2 students had also felt the same way as her.

During the first few weeks of Semester 2, I was told by most of my friends that we were compulsory to register for social engagement and the first thing that popped into my head was this course is going to be very fun as we got to socialise with the people regardless their background outside this university. As far as I know, this course is mainly about giving our contributions to the people outside UM in terms of education or humanitarian aid (orphanage, old folks home).  I was also very sure that this is going to be interesting knowing that we are going to be at some place and give our contributions from many aspects and whatnot.

We also had some discussions regarding the place and our targeted people to deal with was held at the auditorium. However, since the meeting is clash with my English class, I only had like 2-3 chances to attend the meeting. After a few discussions with my fellow coursemates, we have decided to choose MRSM Pendang as our place to do this social engagement and our targeted students were 145 form two students.

A few weeks before the camp started, we had some workshops to train our soft skills and communication to be a facilitator. During the workshop, we were a bit blurr and honestly, I have no talent in dancing as we have like more than 5 cheers to practice and to perform to the students. I have no interest in doing cheers so I had to push myself to do it no matter what as I did not want the students to feel that we are not having much time to do proper preparations. At that time, I just realised that organizing a camp was not easy. You have to brainstorm ideas about the games and how to give a proper instructions to the students. After some task division, I was being in charge to be in a welfare unit, together with Izzati Arina and I was also under my boss, Boon, which is Programme unit.

Upon our arrival at the Pendang, Kedah, I was very overwhelmed and touched that the school provide us homestays (air conditioned room.. yeay!) food and drinks throughout our programme and etc. Such a great hospitality!

During the camp, I was paired up with Kai Thung as facilitators to our group named Serkap. I was very glad that the students of the group were all cheerful and the fact that they actually willing to go to this programme during the weekends is what makes me so touched and i feel so appreciated.

This is our group, Serkap :)

Frankly speaking, I had so much fun throughout the camp. I have learnt a lot and some important things that I have learnt were friendship and cooperation. Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity, as what quoted by Khalil Gibran. They means the world to me. I got to work and mingle with my chinese friends that I am not used to talk to. We shared a lot of precious moments together. We ate together, we laughed together and we were rushing to go here and there (thats one of the sweet moments too :p). Basically, they are always in my heart and i would never forget those happy faces especially my groupmates. I can see the bond between the batchmates are getting stronger. Ahhh i love them! i enjoy seeing them improving and getting the confidence!

Lastly, after our trip to Kedah from 7th April to 10th April, I have learnt so many things, good and bad. Our hardwork and efforts paid off. To sacrifice a few days of my mid semester break was so worth it.. I enjoyed this camp a lot and how i wish i could do this kind of camp again in the near future. I have gained my self esteem and confidence, the way i communicate and cooperate with people. The outcomes are so worth it. I always love the idea of this course which is "giving back to the society" because as a university student, we cannot just simply go to the class/lectures and study from morning till night. We must contribute to the society of what we have learnt. I hope that I would be given the chance to be a part of this kind of camp again and to inspire as many people as I can. Till next time, kids!

Thank you my beloved coordinator, Dr Selvi for helping us in many ways. We cant thank you enough.

and thank you MRSM Pendang, You were great.

Love, Qyla.

At the very beginning, when Social Engagement was introduced into my list of courses, I was excited as having such a great opportunity to accomplish something different yet meaningful, no matter towards myself or giving back to society. However, after attending the talk regarding Social Engagement which was conducted by Dr. Selvi, a sense of mundane thought run through my mind as it was an uphill struggle for us to implement such variety of laborious tasks under limited conditions. It did bother me at some instances but fortunately, despite all these negative thoughts assaulting my mind of determination towards this course, I was able to display vigor and enthusiasm towards the tasks given by this course. The reason behind this mind-changing decision is just simply because, I have a team, and I knew we are going to do it right spectacularly.

When it came to the session in which location and activities had to be chosen, we ambitiously planned to initiate a more inspiring programme rather than those common suggestions by previous volunteers. Hence, we managed to come out with an idea of conducting a camping in MRSM, Pendang Kedah. The location selected was indeed one of the biggest doubts we ever questioned ourselves, but still we accepted this challenge with confidence. Preparation works were equally distributed among us so that maximum efficiency can be achieved within short period of time. Works started to be getting done one by one, and eventually the day before the event was approaching.

The first day of event was ongoing, I was one of the discipline facilitators of the event. I was told to deliberately display fierce expression throughout the whole event, as having all MRSM students getting controlled was difficult, they were extremely excited for being able to join this event.

Throughout the entire process, I observed that most of us displayed leadership spirits to lead and guide the students to engage our prepared activities. Teamwork was shown no matter among the facilitators or the students in order to complete the tasks assigned. Our activities were prepared with creativity and assimilated the concept of Physics into some of the games. For instance, the interesting quiz rally and riddle solving session. Surprisingly, the students were able to complete these activities with theme of Physics. Meanwhile, we tried hard from time to time to improve every single parts of the event to make the flow smooth nay successful. Friendship among us started to surface throughout the event, we reminded each other what we were lacking of and helps were given to those in needs.

At the last few moments of the event, students and facilitators both presented their heart of appreciation towards each other for making this event a successful one. We took a series of photos as a remembrance to us and also the students involved.

The event was officially ended, MRSM presented everyone of us with an appreciation gift for bringing uncountable joys and valuable lessons to the students. Our event successfully inspired the involved students and turning them to be a better self in the future. They promised that they will contribute back to the society no matter in what forms one day by having us as their model.

After accomplishing my social engagement, I have learned how to plan and implement a programme from A to Z; we unanimously agree on things that we argued; we learn to tolerate with each other by not only considering ourselves selfishly; and most importantly, we convey the true and positive messages into society to make this world full of peace and harmony, even little by little. I sincerely appreciate and thanks all walks of life that help and guide us to make this event successful. As a saying goes, “Endure the pain, enjoy the gain”. These valuable lessons should be taught from generation to generation, so that the touch of humanity would never fade.

Social engagement course , at first , I wasn’t really know about this course . Since the course named as “Social Engagement” ,  it probably just want us to engage with the social by doing charity work or voluntary work . Although joining or doing charity work and voluntary work are interesting and meaningful , students will probably think that this course is kind of troublesome and would not register the course if it was not being listed as a university compulsary course . After knowing Dr Selvi is the course coordinator for social engagement course , majority of us decided to register and taking this course this semester , perhaps this course will let us to gain knowledge and life experience where we could not gain from the other courses .

During the first class of social engagement course , Dr Selvi has introduced to us about what is social engagement and through what ways we can engage with the society and contribute or giving back to the society . After listening to the introduction of the course by Dr Selvi , I knew that this course would be a chance for me to learn and practice my soft skills such as communicating with each other effectively and cooperate with each group member to make the programme successfully . After that , we start to have meetings and discussions with all the members to discuss on what place should we choose and what activities should we do for social engagement course . At last , we have all come to a decision that MRSM Pendang , Kedah will be our destination to held our camp . Hmm...so far , I have not been to Kedah before and I do not know about Pendang this place . I was a bit excited because through the course , I get the chance to explore a new place , it would be a good experience for me . Before the camp , we have had a lot of workshops to practice for the cheers and dances that we have to teach the students during the camp. Besides , there are also a series of meetings before the camp in order to make sure that every group member understand about the flow of activities during the camp .

Yoohoo !! it's the day of the camp that we have been awaited . During the camp , I was paired up with Joan to be the group facilitators that take care of Group 9 which named as Fire . Although our group did not manage to achieve Top 5 during the event , they still did a good job and made up a good team . After interact with the students of MRSM Pendang , I get to know that the students are intelligent , very active to voice out their own opinions dan they are far beyond my expectations . Students are very innocent and the ideas coming out from them always amazed us . During Talent night , with just short period of time being provided for them to think and discuss how to act the story , the students still manage to make props and perform the story in a very interesting way . Through the event , I get to practice my leadership skills by assisting the students in my group . Besides , perhaps my communication skills in malay also improved as I have to communicate with the students using malay .

Time flies , it's time to say goodbye to them in MRSM Pendang , Kedah . At here , I would like to say thank you to the Headmaster , Teachers and Students of MRSM Pendang , Kedah as they are very friendly toward us and also very thank you to the homestay they provided to us .  Last but not least , I would like to appreciate our course coordinator , Dr Selvi for guiding us to complete the course , through social engagement course , I realized that we , as university students should not just limit ourselves to study in the university campus while we should always explore ourselves to the outside world so that we can gain knowledge where we will not learning about it in other courses .

A sincerely thank you to every member who involved in this programme , I truly believe that this precious memory will last forever in my mind . :)

We are group 9 with name FIRE !! ~~~ :)

At the beginning, I’m not planning to take this course for this semester. This is because Social Engagement was a course that needed us to do social work which was very troublesome. ( Haha, actually I’m just lazy ~) But what makes me to register for this course? I decided to register this course for this semester because I’m the only student who is from 2nd semester intake, so this would be the chance for me to know all my coursemate better. Before taking this course, I found difficulty to join the “gang” because they knew each other longer and their bonding were strong. So, I believed that by involving in Social Engagement, I could get closer to them.

During preparation stage, I found out that Social Engagement was not only about doing social work. We have to do all the planning, proposals and a lot of paperwork have to be done before we started. Besides, we also having a lot of meeting to understand what’s going to happen during the program. All the stuff that needed in the camp also had to be bought by ourselves. We also had to attend a lot of workshop to practice all the dance we going to teach the students in MRSM, Pendang. Me, as a normal member, I don’t have to do all the paperwork, so by attending all the workshops and meetings was my responsibility.

During the camp, I was one of the facilitator for group Horcux (such an epic name right? But they said this word don’t have any meaning haha). The students there were very active and willing to share their opinion. In this camp, I found out that my communication skill wasn’t good, because I felt difficult to speak in malay fluently, so sometimes I would mixed with English when speaking. Besides, their “slang” were a bit different with the malay we used to speak in KL, so sometimes it also took me few seconds to understand what they said. Anyway, I enjoy very much in this camp, especially during Grand Chase, I believed that they would learn to be a good person (although my job scope is to convince them to rob the bank).

Through this camp, I learnt a lot of softskills that we couldn’t learn it from books such as social skills. There are big ships and small ships but the best ship of all is friendship. I’m really appreciated “Social Engagement”, because of this subject all of us were getting closer to each other, and I’m able to join into the group right now. This would also be one of my sweet memory in my university life.

Social Engagement is not only about doing social work, it also taught us to work as a team. Without teamwork, we couldn’t host and run this camp smoothly and successfully. Lastly, I would like to thank University of Malaya by offering this course as a compulsory course for all t
he UMians.

When I heard about social engagement, the first idea came in my mind it is a volunteering project. I am wondering why a volunteering project will be listed as a compulsory university course for university student. After a short meeting with our course advisor, Dr. Selvi , I knew that this course is a chance for student to practice their soft skill for example , the ability to communicate with each other effectively without misunderstanding. If social engagement is not listed in the registered course, I bet that most of the student will not take it seriously.

After a series of meeting and discussion with the team, MRSM Pendang which located at Kedah had been chosen for our social engagement two days camp. Before we depart to MRSM Pendang, we had workshops and a lot of preparations such as discussion and props for game stations , songs for senamrobik, practice the dance for all the songs and memorize the sorak semangat .

During the camp, I paired up with Si Kee as the group facilitator for Group 9 named as Fire. Although our group did not achieve top 5 during the event but they made up a good team and they had knew each other better since they are from different classes. In LDK 1, 2 and other events they have solve the problems themselves without facilitator giving the hints and act well in the Snow White story. They have shown their intelligence beyond their age level and the high collaboration among them. People also learnt that we should be good in The Grand Chase game.

Throughout the entire event, most of us have shown the leadership especially in giving clear instructions to the students involve and solve the problems we face. The important factor that contribute the success in the event is the teamwork that shown among facilitators and students. We learn to tolerate with each other and put the group benefits before oneself benefits. In this few days, we realize that no man is an island, no man is alone. We  need to perform teamwork in order to make things success with the least mistake.

I have learnt a lot through the social engagement course. It let me realize that as a university student we should not limit ourselves in the university campus and study but we should explore ourselves to the outside world and think out of the box. The bonding among us had strengthened through this event. The seed of friendship had been planted on each other heart. I believe that we will keep these precious memories in our heart. It is my pleasure to be part of the team in this program. Thank you.
